Often imitated but never duplicated. This is the FIRST Filipino-Canadian Basketball Tournament to be held
at HoopDome: Canada’s Premier Multi-Court Basketball only Facility in Downsview Park, Canada.

For over 6  years bring, the “Much Anticipated Basketball Event” of the year, THE ONE AND ONLY: THE MABUHAY CUP BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT. The organizing committee with Ramon Fermin, Vilma Tahsin (Tournament Chair), Manny Villamor (Games Director) and Bob San Juan (Administration) are overwhelm with the number of interested clubs who wanted to field their teams. Our expectation exceeded and the numbers ballooned to *50 teams. Some clubs are place on the waiting list and eager to grab the spot from teams who withdrew their entry. Teams coming from the 416 and 905 area including York and Durham region. PBA of Ottawa returned for second year and fielded their best team in the open division.

Who are the front-runners? Who are the teams to watch? It is really hard to predict as they always say that “the ball is round”. This is a tournament and anybody’s game. You do not know if you will be playing against the ‘Marquee’ teams or with the ‘Cinderella’ teams. Both, will give you a tough time in the hard court.

League Organizations and Basketball Clubs geared up in preparation for this prestigious tournament. We saw Coaches watched play-off games in various leagues and provincial tournaments or merely drop by to a regular pick-up games in High Park, Mississauga, Scarborough, Lakeshore and other ‘baller’ hot spots in GTA neighbourhoods scouting for talented, competitive, ‘franchise’ players to reinforce their team. As one of the coaches said, “if you ran out of players, you can go to airport and wait in the arrival area for new Pinoy immigrants”. How will you find out if the kid knows how to play basketball? They say that you will know by instinct and by the look, (or willingness to don a basketball jersey). On a serious note, one of the team leaders mentioned, “We have to get the cream of the crop, the best among the best players at Mabuhay Cup.

This is a weekend tournament and not a regular league. Team plays for 2 to 3 consecutive days in a tournament compared to a league where team plays only once on weekends for the season. You can afford to lose games in a league but not in a tournament. The first 2 games are crucial and if you lose both games, you’re out of luck!”  All teams are guaranteed to play 3 games even if you lose the first 2 games. Your mathematical chance of earning a play-off berth improves as you win and total points advantage makes a difference in positioning your team to the number 1 and 2 spot. At this tournament, every players should hold their head up high, victorious or not and every team should be proud to compete at this prestigious basketball event.  Good Luck To All Participants!
