A GREAT Kapuso Experience !

July 18, 2009- True to its trademark as the biggest , the most exciting and mostly attended summer Filipino event- the PIDC Mabuhay Summer Festival was successfully participated by the different ages of not only by Filipinos but other members of the Canadian community.

Filipinos From US And Canada

Majority of the annual visitors travel as far as the neighboring US states and all over Ontario to attend the cultural extravaganza featuring the best among the Filipino Arts, Culture the display of booths and of course the food.An example of the anticipation was- Nilo Reyes and family of New Market started to prepare a week before to plan to attend the event and brought with him even his in laws. In the end he told his friends that it is worth the drive to Toronto to see the many Kababayans who were present. Such is the nature of the Mabuhay Festival –there is always something to see and for the whole family.

PIDC committed officers fresh from bringing the GMA Kapuso artistas to the tour of the Niagara Peninsula almost stayed the whole night preparing and supervising the cycle of activities to ensure that the Metro Manila Convention Pavilion will be ready for the thousands of expectators. The President Jun Enverga and the Executive VP Minda Neri and the Board as well as untiring volunteers assigned up to the wee hours of the morning have only few hours of sleep just to ensure all are properly coordinated.

The Venue

A wider hall at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre as venue has afforded more room for exhibitors and visitors, the lay-out allowing for smooth indoor traffic. The huge venue has also allowed for more food concessionaires, something that food-loving patrons appreciated. PIDC accounted for 170 booth spaces occupied, while PCCT brought in 67 exhibitors that include the 10 food vendors. Over-all total of 237 booths became the cornerstone of display of products and services including enterprising youths who exhibited their enterprising streak by renting stalls where they sold T-shirts and other youth-targeted paraphernalia. For 2009 PIDC added an extra 2000 chairs so that a lot more will be able to enjoy their favourite shows in comfort.

The Exhibits

In front, guests were greeted with a bahay-kubo laden with kiping, the colorful rice wafers of the world-famous Pahiyas festival of Lucban, Quezon Province. The festival honors San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, in thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Traditionally, houses along the old streets of Lucban are artistically decorated with agricultural harvest, and of the very unique highlight of the festival, the “kiping”. Drop by the Mindanao Corner to have a feel of the exotic and the rich culture of the Philippine South which featured a simulation of the real Vinta The area was very busy for picture taking and souvenir photo opportunities. A paparazzi haven indeed.

A Gawad Kalinga depicting a real village GK housing project is situated in the strategic area of the venue. This is to show where the donations and proceeds will be going and the charitable beneficiary for this year’s event.

The Program

The day started solemnly with a Holy Mass at 8 a.m.officiated by Fr. Ben Ebcas the pastor of Our Lady of Assumption. This was followed by a performance of the Tinikling, and song numbers by the famed Filipino operatic voice, Ms. Eleanor Calbes. Pepe Smith and the Juan de la Cruz band rocked the crowd early in the morning to set the tone for the day. Pacific and Polynesian dances on stage revved up everybody by their moves. Winners of the Seniors’ Karaoke singing contest performed ala Frank Sinatra and Diomedes Maturan of the 60’s songs. On the youth number, students and members of PATAC , Migrante Youth, University of Toronto and Ryerson University performed the call of the nationalist youth and the search of the true Filipino Identity with their performance of the “ Panambitan ng Kabataang Makabayan” . It was started by Belinda Corpuz, this year’s winner of the most versatile vocal in the Young Asian Singing Competition and the winner of the Young Pinoy Idol. Myke Miranda of Kapisanan and U of T, touched the crowd with his spoken words titled “Quarter Spanish “ and the songs of Levy Abad Jr.of PATAC called “Na Shock Ako” depicted the thousands of Filipino Migrants experiences and conditions working in a far away land.

In the centre of the hall were the three award-winning photographers which showcased their work at the festival an example is renowned artist & photographer Carlos Esguerra who is based from New York City displayed amazing photos and almost sold out . During the afternoon the Kapihan was busy to those who made siesta while viewing the exciting photo exhibit dubbed ” Pilipinas - Images of a Country and its People” . The photo montage/collage highlights award- winning photos by Revoli Cortez and Edwin Bacasmas , a stylized showcase Filipino culture including personalities, places and events taken in various regions of the Philippines.

A display of banners and slogans depicting the plight of the Filipinos were also featured with the participation of many regional associations and cause oriented groups among them Lucena Association, Santaginians Association, Knights of Rizal, Migrante Ontario, Philippine Renal Nurses, PCUAA, Archdiocesan Filipino Catholic Mission and many others.

The Minerva Studio was busy and buzzing with impromptu events emanating a real live studio performances and experiences. The Baylehan is the venue where serious dancers displayed their talents. Table Tennis Exhibition and competition showcased the best of our Ping Pong enthusiasts, some coming from out of town and the KIDZ ZONE was also busy as ever.

The kapihan or tambayan corner made good its promise of respite from one’s walkabout, serving affordable coffee and favorite Pinoy snacks. More importantly, it’s “sari-sari” store façade made for good conversation piece for patrons, many unable to resist asking storekeepers if they sold “Choc Nut” like in the Philippines (and the answer was “yes”!)

Mid in the afternoon everybody consumed their energy by laughing with the jokes of, Mr. Ron Josol, one of the funniest men alive – another Filipino success story in the comedy showbiz world. The traditional PIDC Pageant beauties graced everyone as they sashayed and strutted their stuff on stage. Late in the afternoon the Santacruzan wound its way around the hall, a reflection of the Filipino’s religious tradition. Afterall, the festival was about the Filipino and his culture.

The display of arts and talents was carried forward towards the night as the Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe and Culture Philippines-Ontario performed the famed Pista sa Nayon a performance of intricate collection of Philippine folk and ethnic dances, world-class entertainment that have won for the dance troupes invitations to renowned international folk festivals. Pinoy pop culture is very much alive. This was proven by Studio 6 talents like Ms. Josie de Leon (who now has her own TV show) who headlined the musical revue titled “Girl, Ikakasal Ka Nga Ba” which was well received by the audience now numbering thousands.

The Stars!

Pandemonium erupted immediately upon the arrival on stage by the much awaited GMA Kapuso stars. Raymund Gutierrez of “Showbiz Central” fame was joined by Iza Calzado (that she is head-turner is no hype) on stage to get things going before the headliners—Richard Gutierrez and Rhian Ramos—made their own appearance. There is no doubt die-hard fans of Richard and Rhian (or “Zorro” for that matter) were more than happy to see their favorite actors up close and personal. The love team could have done more acts on stage (perhaps following the song-and-dance routine that is staple in such shows) but nature had its way of interfering with events. First, a ravaging typhoon prevented GMA 7’s leading stars from leaving Manila on a flight that would have arrived in time for a meet-the-press function where only Raymund and Iza made it. Second, and more seriously, Richard had been very unwell from since leaving Manila en route to Toronto.

Perhaps, among Richard’s lingering memories of his Toronto visit would be his trips to St. Mike’s Hospital where he went for treatments even within the hour just prior to his stage appearance. However, Faye Nalicat, GMA International’s Consultant for Canada, assures everyone that the audience’s cheers and screaming (some on the verge of crying) echoed the longest in Richard’s ears.

Ms. Nalicat writes: “We are all so pleased with the turn out with over 13,000 people! We can’t believe how warm the welcome was for Richard Gutierrez, Rhian Ramos, Iza Calzado and Raymund Gutierrez. It felt like GMA Pinoy TV has been available in Greater Toronto for several years, when in fact, it has been for less than two years. GMA Pinoy TV and its Kapuso Artists are very honoured to be at the Mabuhay Festival on July 18 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.”

The long cue for autographs at the end of the show certainly spoke volumes.

The Volunteers, Supporters, And Sponsors

It was a fun filled afternoon but over-all it was a tremendous success due to the participation of the many volunteers, organizations, vendors, media and specially the major sponsors like ROGERS Communications Inc and, GMA Pinoy TV, Casa Manila to name a few and most of all to everyone who came inspite of the economic recession which in the end it is all worth it not only have they enjoyed and have funfilled memories but made a difference since by buying a ticket for the festival, they in turn contributed to the charitable efforts of PIDC geared towards helping the poor.

Ms. Minda Neri, Mabuhay Festival 2009 Chair, President Jun Enverga and PIDC Board and Council members, thank everyone for yet another successful festival. It can only get even better next year, with the community’s continued support. After all, the festival and the Pinoy in Canada are now kapuso. SEE YOU ALL ON JULY 24, 2010 !

The heat factor was the major issue on Sunday afternoon and truly I kept praying hard for the day to go by without any incident from heat stroke. Our volunteer green t-shirts literally drenched from sweat, you surely can tell what’s a bad hair day at the Mabuhay Cup, and forget the make-up ladies, it will just not hold. Whether you like it or not Mabuhay Cup lets your natural beauty shine, not much of a problem with gents. Awarding was on time and fun with all PIDC staff and Enverga girls on the floor. When the last trophy and medal awarded, sponsors (Rogers, GMA, Casa Manila, Dr. Vicky Santiago, etc.) mentioned and thanked, there was no better way than to cool off with refreshing halo-halo before everyone kissed goodbye.

Unlike all other PIDC gigs Mabuhay Cup is a 4-day event from Thursday-Sunday where the organizing committee usually takes Thursday and Friday off from work every year. Non-stop from first game down to the final game, that typical sore body ache at the end of the day, triggered a deep sigh of relief and satisfaction, it’s worth it! A day off from work after the tournament to recharge is heavenly.

THANK YOU ALL! It was really overwhelming to see the PIDC Board/Council’s presence and support led by Jun & Rosemer Enverga throughout the tournament from day 1 to day 4. Most of you even battled the storm on the way only to put up with the extreme heat in HoopDome last Sunday but all our efforts paid off. Because of great execution of teamwork: DEFENSE, DRIBBLING, PASSING and SHOOTING, PIDC Board/Council and all our volunteers, the one and only “Mabuhay Cup, often imitated but never duplicated” basketball tournament, WE SCORED! We did it again!

If I missed any names please accept my sincere apology for this unintentional mistake. We know from our hearts we are all in this together in this Pilipino favorite sport of basketball. Distracting those kids away from malls, video games, etc. and for bringing the family together through basketball just even for a weekend is a major accomplishment.

How can we ever thank the team led by Rory by attending to few incidents however minor they knew they were in safe hands. FIRST AID TEAM: Josie Consunji, Girlie Padillo, Helen Lao, Cyrill Theliere, Maribeth Perez, Bernadette Ramos, Eden Prieto, Maricar Thelliere, Daisy Olegario, Chris Diaz, Rhonda Leano, Arnel Dayao, and Liberty Esguerra.
MS. SPORTS MODEL & JUDGES: Rory Elefano

Thank you gentlemen for minding the gates. SECURITY: Tony Villarin, Nanding, Jimmy Marasigan.
TICKET CONTROL/RECEPTION: Jojo Rodriguez, Minda Neri, Danio Penuliar, Tony Villarin, Nene Ticson, Bing Marasigan, Leonie Manzanares, Anita Elefano, Gene.

Thank you Rosemer for the BEAUTIES, PERFOMERS & ENTERTAINMENT.

The RULES COMMITTEE and BUFFER team: George Lalata, Roger Tarca, Mark Villegas, Pors Canlas

MANNY VILLAMOR and BOB SAN JUAN, it is always a pleasure working with you guys.

And last but not the least, Minda and Rory, thanks a million for your patience and seeing through this one new kid on the block.

Maraming Salamat and Mabuhay Tayong Lahat!

Yours in basketball,

Vilma Tahsin

It’s confirmed: one of the Philippines’ sexiest and most beautiful women –-Iza Calzado—is among the top entertainers at the forthcoming Mabuhay Festival.

The daughter of well-known choreographer Lito Calzado, Iza will showcase her versatile talent as she joins top-billed actors Richard Gutierrez and Rhian Ramos on the Mabuhay stage come July 18.

Iza Calzado

A popular TV and movie actor (who owes her Caucasian looks to her late Irish-Spanish Filipina mother), Ms. Calzado has consistently ranked very high in surveys conducted by Starmometer and FHM magazines, the Philippines’ leading pollsters of beauty and popularity.

Raymond Gutierrez, twin brother of Richard– is also coming to town, adding to the predictably pulsating finale of the Mabuhay Festival.

July 18 will be a kaleidoscope of colors and activity that starts solemnly with a Holy Mass at 8 a.m. This is followed by a performance of the tinikling, and song numbers by the famed Filipino operatic voice, Ms. Eleanor Calbes. Then, Philippine rock legend Pepe Smith and the Juan de la Cruz band will get your heart beat racing this early in the day. Why, even the smell from the food concessions will get your senses working! (By the way, you can take a leisurely stroll with your favourite Pinoy dish as you check out the trade show of the PIDC.)

Sorry…but there’s no time for a quick siesta in the afternoon; Pacific and Polynesian dances on stage will rev up your system once more. Talented Seniors won’t be taking their usual naps either. Winners of the Seniors’ karaoke singing contest will be performing while some will show the younger generation more traditional dances.

Three award-winning photographers will showcase their work at the festival. As you take your afternoon coffee (should you find chilling out at the kapihan too laid back for you), view the exciting photo exhibit dubbed ” Pilipinas - Images of a Country and its People” . The photo montage/collage highlights award- winning photos by Revoli Cortez and Edwin Bacasmas , a stylized showcase Filipino culture including personalities, places and events taken in various regions of the Philippines. The exhibitors guarantee that seeing the exhibit will make one proud of the Philippines and all the progress made in the past few years. And, if you happen to be around when the exhibitors are also snapping away, your relatives in the Philippines might just see your picture in an exhibit of photos taken of Filipinos in Toronto which be held at the Intramuros, Manila come November 2009.

New York-based Carlos Esguerra is an internationally-renowned photographer who has reaped more than 40 national and international awards, his works selected in numerous juried exhibitions in many states in the U.S. and in other countries Canada, Austria, France, Germany, and Sweden. Esguerra’s photos are noted for being simple, clean and uncluttered, suggesting Zen influences. In recognition of excellence in his craft and for carrying the good name of the Filipino, Esguerra was given the 2008 Pamana ng Pilipino Award by President Gloria M. Arroyo in Malacanang.

Back on stage, Mr. Ron Josol, one of the funniest men alive (certainly the most visible among Asian-Canadian comics), is guaranteed to make everyone laugh their hearts out. Also, catch a glimpse of PIDC Pageant beauties as they sashay and strut their stuff on stage.

As evening draws near, imagine yourself in a small town in the Philippines as the folks line the streets to wait for the most colorful religious procession in the month of May—the Santacruzan—pass the route. At once a catechetical device and a religious historical tableau, the Santacruzan evokes images of Spanish Philippines. In this particular procession, winners of the various PIDC pageants take on roles like that of the Reyna Elena (St. Helena, the queen-mother of the Emperor Constantine) whose quest for the cross where Jesus died is the basis of this street drama of sorts.

Josie

Just before the grand evening entertainment featuring GMA’s hottest stars begins at 8 p.m., the pride of the Filipino community in Toronto–Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe and Culture Philippines-Ontario—will once again perform Philippine folk and ethnic dances, world-class entertainment that have won for the dance troupes invitations to renowned international folk festivals. Studio 6 headlined by Josie de Leon will follow with “ Girl, Ikakasal ka nga ba?” musical.

Immediately after is the magic hour, the much awaited GMA Kapuso, Rhian Ramos, Richard Gutierrez and Iza Calzado will all be there to dazzle you! Let it be said that you were there and experienced it all!

Should you need a souvenir of Mabuhay Festival 2009, don’t forget to have your picture taken at a bahay-kubo laden with kiping, the colorful rice wafers of the world-famous Pahiyas festival of Lucban, Quezon Province. The festival honors San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, in thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Traditionally, houses along the old streets of Lucban are artistically decorated with agricultural harvest, and of the very unique highlight of the festival, the “kiping”. Drop by the Mindanao Corner to have a feel of the exotic and the rich culture of the Philippine South.

Don’t forget: the Mabuhay Festival is your one-stop shop for pure fun, wholesome entertainment for the entire family and the barkada. Thousands more chairs—at least 20 of which are designed for persons with disability— had been added in anticipation of the huge turn out this year. And all throughout the day, experience life in front of a live TV camera as the creative crew of Minerva Studio goes about the routine of taping live shows. For the dance aficionados, join the line dancing for the public at the Baylehan or watch the Table Tennis Championship as players battle for the coveted trophy.

The Mabuhay Festival at the Metro Toronto Convention Center is definitely the place to be on July 18th. Be there and be part of the fiesta experience just like home!

The biggest concentration of our youths was on the volleybal tournament courts where an unprecedented 13 teams competed for the coveted PIDC Independence Day Volleyball Cup. Our youths responded to our call for involvement and surely made a strong statement at the courts.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and the Hon Ken Dryden, MP joined the festivities and the longest parade ever of all the Associations.

Our modern-day heroes, the Caregivers were amply represented by several groups who are at the vanguard on the push for permanent reforms of the Live-in Caregiver Program for our embattled caregivers. PIDC President Jun Enverga once again reiterated the commitment of the PIDC to support the drive for the overdue reforms.

The community’s leading affair (Dancing To Be A Star) targeting ballroom aficionados in the GTA and one of PIDC (Philippine Independence Day Council) many projects is once again spearheading another glamorous evening, October 3rd, 2009 and will all be raged at Sts. Peter & Paul Banquet Hall in Scarborough and a not to be missed occasion at all.

As PIDC (DStars) enters its 3rd year of bringing the community it’s dancing art prowess, Jun Enverga, President once again appointed stunning Leone Manzanares as Chair, to lead and organize the sensational, thrilling and magnificent event to be co-chaired this year by Rosemer Enverga and Rory Elefano which were previously done by Imie Belanger and Pete Mauricio, who originally discovered and articulated out their dancing ideas with Leone who in turn highly structured and elaborated the whole concept.

During the exclusive press launch, the good news is we are bringing personalities this year coming from the famous “Dancing With Stars” on TV as well as “You Think You Can Dance” celebrity. As this is one of the most annual imaginative events in the GTA, here’s another great chance to socialize and show off your acquired skills on the dance floor on the part of the competitors, viewers and guests and you will be guaranteed a rip roaring good times and who knows ….a surprise or two.

This annual festivity is also a showcase of colourful and vibrant aggressive competitors who all look ravishing in their outrageous outfits as they were given different categories to choose from in front of the three adjudicators. This year, we will be seeking for a Silver and Gold Winners once again. It only involves dancing one Latin you can choose from (Rumba/ Jive/ Cha-Cha/ Merengue or even Salsa is accepted) and only one Modern or a traditional international dance choosing from (Waltz/ Fox Trot/ Quick Steps or Tango).
So… come one and all, nurture your heart and soul from inside out and get glowing with this talk of the town electrifying dancing event.
BRAVO ….PIDC!!!
